Long‐term single‐column model intercomparison of diurnal cycle of precipitation over midlatitude and tropical land

چکیده
General Circulation Models (GCMs) have for decades exhibited difficulties in modelling the diurnal cycle of precipitation (DCP). This issue can be related to inappropriate representation processes controlling sub-diurnal phenomena like convection. In this study, 11 single-column versions GCMs are used investigate interactions between convection and environmental conditions, that control nocturnal convections, transition from shallow deep on a time-scale. Long-term simulations performed over two continental land sites: Southern Great Plains (SGP) USA 12 summer months 2004 2015 Manacapuru site at central Amazon (MAO) Brazil full years 2014 2015. The analysis is done regimes: afternoon convective regime regime. Most models produce too early, likely due missing shallow-to-deep these models. At SGP, unified schemes better simulate onset time precipitation. MAO, heating peak much lower level compared with observation, indicating For precipitation, most all allow triggered above boundary layer. indicates importance model capability detect elevated simulating Sensitivity studies indicate (a) nudging variables towards observations has minor impact DCP, (b) treatment capture mid-level help (c) atmosphere other components climate system (e.g. land) also important DCP coupled These results provide long-term statistical insights which physical essential DCP.

Diurnal cycle of tropical precipitation in a general circulation model
[1] Hourly averaged precipitation rates from an ensemble of the Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3) simulations for the 44-month period from January 1998 through August 2001 are compared to observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. In order to have adequate sampling by the satellite, comparisons are made for 15 longitude 10 latitude boxes and for larger ge...

The passive infrared (IR) imaging signature of buried mines under three different soil surface conditions is investigated in this work. The three-dimensional (3-D) nature of the mine, the site, and the temporal attributes of surrounding climate and exposed radiation are accounted for large and moderate-scale clutter surfaces as well as a smooth surface. The effect of the shortand long-wavelengt...

[1] The error in the diurnal cycle of precipitation over land in the tropics in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts forecast model is investigated using a single column model with idealized forcing of the omega field, as well as short-term and long runs of the full three-dimensional model. The model precipitates a few hours after sunrise, as it does not represent correctly th...

[1] MM5-based regional climate model (CMM5) simulations of the diurnal cycle of U.S. summer precipitation are found to be sensitive to the choice of cumulus parameterization schemes, whose skills are highly regime selective. The Grell scheme realistically simulates the nocturnal precipitation maxima and their associated eastward propagation of convective systems over the Great Plains where the ...
